OK - worked it out, so I'll answer my own post in case it helps anyone else later on.
Basically, the partial state MUST be saved using the "FILE" button (top Left of the Recording screen) . The normal SAVE button puts the panel into a database that I couldnt access directly, and the fsf file format ...

Now I am (hopefully) getting to a better level of landings, my database shows over 50 examples of how bad I was at the start!
